LA TROBE DISCIPLINES IN WORLD'S TOP 100
La Trobe
University disciplines have been rated among the world’s top 100 in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The rankings – released today – evaluated 2,858 universities verifying 8,391 programs on the basis of 68 million citations.
Sociology came
in at number 43, placing La Trobe in the world’s top 50 most elite
institutions. In four other subject areas – communications
and media, history, educationand linguistics –
La Trobe was ranked among the top 100 world universities.
Psychology, English
language and literature, along withaccounting and finance ranked
in the top 150, while philosophy and law ranked
in the 150 to 200 band.
‘This is an extremely
pleasing result, both for the University and the specific areas involved,’ saidVice-Chancellor
Professor John Dewar. ‘It is a great credit to our academic staff
who are to be congratulated on this result.
‘It also provides solid
foundations for the exciting course and research developments that are being
rolled out under the University’s new Future Ready strategy,’ he said.
The results highlight La
Trobe’s continued high global standards in the humanities and the social
sciences since the surveys began in 2005 when these areas were ranked in the
top 50 and 100 categories respectively.

Executive Dean of the
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Tim Murray, said the outcome
provided additional evidence of the fundamental strengths of humanities and
social sciences being taught at La Trobe.
‘The most recent Excellence in
Research for Australia assessment by the Federal Government
produced an outstanding result for the faculty and this report is a further
vote of confidence in our commitment to a vibrant and dynamic range of
research, courses and subjects,’ Professor Murray said.
Executive Dean of
Education, Professor Lorraine Ling, said achieving a top
100 world subject ranking would boost the profile of La Trobe’s education
program both in Australia and internationally.
‘The result endorses the
quality and innovative nature of our courses, which offer a range of teaching
qualifications for people seeking careers ranging from kindergarten, primary
and secondary school teaching to working in outdoor, tourism and recreation
industries,’ she said.
Commenting on the achievements
of accounting and finance and law in the rankings, Executive Dean of the
Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, Professor Leigh Drake, said, ‘our
high standards and increasing ranking in international polls such as QS
reflect the great work being undertaken by all.’

in the discipline of education in the QS World Rankings by Subject 2013.
This ranking places
MGSE among the world’s best, with Harvard Graduate School of Education coming
in at number one, and the University of Cambridge at number two. This is also
the highest rank achieved by any discipline, at any university, in Australia.
RMIT University - International scholarships for study in Semester 2, 2013
RMIT
University has two scholarship opportunities for international students looking
to commence their studies in Semester 2, 2013.
Scholarships
for high achieving international students
RMIT
University will be offering a total of 74 scholarships of A$3000 each to
international students applying to study a selected
list of programs at RMIT University in Semester 2 2013 (July intake).
To be
eligible for this scholarship, a student must:
- be
an international student
- display
high standards of academic merit
- have
a full offer (no conditions) to commence in one of the above programs in
Semester 2, 2013 (July intake)
- accept
their offer by Friday 7 June 2013.
The
scholarship cannot be transferred to another program or deferred to a future
intake.

School
of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT) Scholarship
Applications
are now open for international students commencing an undergraduate or
postgraduate program, in RMIT's School of Computer Science and IT, in Semester
2, 2013. Applications will close on the 19th July, 2013.
The
scholarship covers a once-off payment of $5000 towards tuition fees, paid once
the student has enrolled in the program.
